Ingredients
Taco Seasoning
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 2 teaspoons paprika or smoked paprika
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
Instructions
1. Check the labels on every spice and choose products labeled gluten free when cross-contact is a concern.
2. Add the chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, black pepper, and optional cayenne to a small dry bowl.
3. Whisk until the spices are evenly combined and the mixture has a uniform color. Alternatively, place the ingredients in a jar, close the lid, and shake well.
4. Use approximately 2 tablespoons of seasoning for each pound of ground meat, beans, lentils, tofu, or vegetables.
5. Transfer the remaining seasoning to a clean, dry, airtight jar. Label it and store it in a cool, dark cabinet for up to six months.
Notes
For taco filling: Cook 1 pound of ground meat, then add 2 tablespoons of seasoning and 1/2 cup of water. Simmer uncovered for 3 to 5 minutes.
For a mild blend, omit the cayenne. For lower sodium, reduce or omit the salt and season the finished dish separately.
The recipe makes approximately 6 tablespoons, enough to season about 3 pounds of filling.
